Snowfall and winter weather could cause DART service delays

Heavy snowfall is forecasted for Friday, January 14 and poor road conditions could impact service into Saturday, Jan. 15. We will communicate any detours or major service delays over 15 minutes on this page.

Detours and delays

Local Route 17 - Hubbell Ave/Altoona will be detoured through 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 15 while the Outlets of Des Moines are closed due to winter weather. Buses cannot travel to the Outlets because the roadway is blocked, and will instead travel North on Bass Pro Drive, turning right to travel on Adventureland Drive, turning right to travel on Tall Grass Prairie, turning right to travel on NE Hubbell Ave and then turning left to travel on 36th Ave SW and continuing onto the regular route.

Because of the difficult road conditions, bus operators are not stopping at stops mid-hill and ask riders to get on and off buses using courtesy stops at the top or bottom of hilly streets.

Track your buses

We encourage riders to check this site often  to learn of any major delays or detours. DART also has several tools that riders can use to track their buses in real-time to minimize the amount of time they need to spend waiting outside at stops.

  • MyDART Trip Planner: Riders can use the MyDART Trip Planner and the Next DART bus function on DART’s website or in the MyDART app to track their buses in real-time.
  • MyDART Text: Riders can track real-time arrival times for buses at specific stops by texting “DART” and their stop number (example: DART1234) to 515515.
  • MyDART Phone: Riders can call in to the schedule information line to receive real-time estimates of bus arrivals by dialing 515-283-8100 and selecting option 1.

Snow covered bus stop?

Just as property owners must clear any public sidewalks on their property after a snow, we also rely on them to ensure bus stops that can be cleared are. Riders can learn more about our policies regarding snow at stops by clicking here.

If it’s been more than two days since a snowfall, and you still cannot access your bus stop due to snow, we encourage you to let DART staff know and we’ll make every effort to ensure the stop is cleared if possible.

To report a stop, riders can either:

  • Email dart@ridedart.com to notify Customer Service of the issue. Please include your bus stop number, or a description of the location of your bus stop and what route you ride in your email.
  • Call DART Customer Service at 515-283-8100 option 0 to report inaccessible stops.
  • Or, notify Customer Service by reporting the issue to staff at the Customer Service window in the DART Central Station lobby.
