DART Central Station named "age-friendly" facility

Posted on June, 9 2017

Volunteers representing Age-Friendly Greater Des Moines recently evaluated DART Central Station for its accessibility to riders of all ages. Local groups including the AARP, Aging Resources of Central Iowa, the City of Des Moines and Des Moines University work through Age-Friendly Greater Des Moines to conduct these business evaluations at locations across the region. They rank a variety of items off a checklist as they walk around a business, including accessibility of entrances, restrooms, seating, lighting, noise levels and customer service. A business must receive a rating of at least three and a half stars to pass the evaluation. DART received a rating of 4.4 stars.

Overall, Age-Friendly Greater Des Moines was very impressed with DART staff and DART Central Station. DART received its highest ratings on customer service responsiveness, layout of the lobby with adequate seating and wide aisles, entry visibility, the visibility of information displayed in the lobby and the accessibility of the restrooms. Some suggestions the group had for DART was to add a sign directing customers to the elevator and to add additional signage letting people know where they can and can’t walk on the grounds of DCS, especially when out on the platforms.
